Inaudible melodies [7]

Jack Johnson’s “Inaudible Melodies” is a calming, relaxing song that is subtly being harshly critical to the way people live their lives. Johnson feels as if people aren’t paying enough attention to the little things in life; that they are all moving too fast to take in the simple things, the things that really matter. I also believe that Johnson is portraying that people look too much into life by trying to analyze every detail of life and they end up over analyzing the situation and they miss what was really important.
The lyrical quote “Dust of your thinking caps” (which uses metonymy to substitute thinking caps for one’s brain) as well as “Maybe Eisenstein should just relax” is telling me that one should give their mind a break and just let life go with the flow. People could interpret the first quote to be that you need to think more but if one were to read further into the song they would see how Johnson is saying that “Dust of your thinking caps” is how people are living and “Maybe Eisenstein should just relax” is how they should live.
Johnson throws many forms of schemes and tropes into this song. One, as stated above, was using thinking caps in the place of someone’s mind by using metonymy. A few oxymora were used in the song as well, for instance “Silent films are full of sound”, I believe that Johnson is really saying that if one were to look close enough they would find that many things are hidden in the silence. Johnson, as well as any other musician, uses assonance to make the words at the end of the lines in his verses rhyme, which in turn creates more of a flow in the music.
I agree with Jack Johnson’s views in this song. I too feel that people take advantage of the life they are living and instead of taking it one day at a time, they seem to be taking it years at a time. If people we to slow down how they live and live life to the fullest then they would be able to comprehend the ways of life easier, but don’t take the easy way out because, “shortcuts can slow you down,” meaning that there is always going to be a problem if you try to get around doing something the right way, which will cause a delay in your task.
